For one thing this year ipv4 address allocation run out (approx 45 days from the date of this post), with only 7 /8′s left at the time of writing …

For me I shall call it the year of certification,I’ve been reading several for 6-7 years now, not ever getting around to taking the exams

Whilst I will keep my Comp TIA A+ Networks and Hardware books, I am not seeing any real benefit of them, A+ hardware refers to more of more of the inner workings of computing hardware in general (hard hard drives cpu memory prints work, etc … ) same with Networks both seem to cover the underlying theory in depth and whilst I can see they can help to provide a better understanding for the begginer, if you have some university education I would skip them and go strait to CCNA & vendor specific certification (RH* for me).

I’m also going to be writing a lot more documentation this year and authoring more tools, around

• RHCS (Red hat cluster services)
• SNORT (IDS, though ossec is looking good to replace this)
• MAP Reduce in python (Because I can rapidly develop in python … looking at things like rsa decryption ..)
• CUDA … (I know I keep saying it, but looking at security for one parallel programming needs more investigation on my part).

Such is the case with project deadlines, and frankly I’d rather be rushed off my feet than unemployed at the moment

That said I do have a few projects in the works first and foremost is the WordPress-Flowplayer 2.1.0.0 release,

1. I have secured the latest version of flowplayer courtesy of the guys over at flowplayer.org,
2. I am working on integrating the mediamelon CDN service, which will be bundled with 2.1.0.0
3. With any luck provided I can get the code right this will also allow the use of 3rd party plugins
4. Working on an advance ‘scripting’ area to allow you to embed your own syntax in the plugin hook.

I am also redeveloping Froomi at present to add in some additional features, which will be served using a RESTful API, more on that soon,

Lastly there will be a new blog appearing soon geared mainly toward security and pen testing, following a nickname I have now picked up from work ‘the sith admin’ I’ve registered an appropriate domain and will be setting up on there soon.Tweet

Too many projects, too few hours in the day.

Froomi – All in one HTTP Server, Search Engine, Pseudo Streaming Media server
(Might add transcoding)

This project is up on google code: http://code.google.com/p/froomi/

So far the HTTP module is basically complete and already has GZIP compression support for browsers that send the appropriate header to indicate they support it.

I will being working on the Pseudo streaming component shortly, to recap this is in an Alpha state at the moment, I will be putting the server live on http://www.froomi.com shortly once the Pseudo streaming component is complete.

Flowplayer for wordpress, is still in development the code base has been completely re-written as per the previews you can now see the meta boxes in action, along with the license detection, I think I am going to cut a couple of features and just get the next release out the door (yes RTMP will still be in this release!).

Contributions, some people have shown an interest in contributing to these projects, contributions are very welcome and will carry the appropriate credits in the source code and license, I would go so far as to encourage contributions from developers as this will actually speed up releases for these projects.

• Working knowledge of creating diff patches (not required bug a huge bonus)
• Ability to document your changes in English, sorry this is a requirements

google’s official reply is that an update to their backup software has been causing interruption to service: http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2009/02/update-on-todays-gmail-outage.html

So all we can do is ride it out, and has others have said Google’s uptime is still going to be better than most other mail solutions, _AND_ they are offering a 15day credit to anyone paying for the premium service … AND this IS a BETA …

So fair play to google, and I hope they sort the issues soon.

As for the whiners crying over downtime in their free beta server (And I mean those not paying for if but demanding compensation for loss of their free service … I mean WTF???) to paraphrase Yahtzee, The only help they need is the help that requires taking them behind the garden shed and tearfully putting both barrels through their oblivious little faces …

And implemented the WP-reCaptcha plugin to help reduce the amount of spam signups and comments.

So in short I am sorry if yours was a genuine account victim of the clean out, but you can sign back up and help digitize historic books in the process.

The plugin also utilizes the Mail Hide functionality show here: HIDDEN EMAIL to help protect email addresses.

So now you can post your email address in comments safe from spam.

UPDATE: There is an issue with .co.uk email addresses, I have contacted the plugin author, for the time being just be aware any hidden email addresses with show as domain.co so just add .uk on the end

UPDATE2: I have replaced the regex in the plugin with my own loose matching email regex, and the issue is now solved I have posted the code on the plugin page comments for the author, with any luck an update will soon be available.Tweet

Pledgie as most of you know is a donation system for tracking set campaigns, you will of seen in the sidebar a link to
http://pledgie.com/campaigns/2090 I have since sent in a deletion request for the campaign due to idiotic users spamming the ‘report spam’ function of Pledgie and marking the campaign down under their own.

Well that’s nice of you, the campaign was to offset the near £1400 server rental cost for Saiweb, this was to provide open source software to the some 5000 unique visitors a month finding the answers to their technical issues on this blog and downloading the tools available from subversion.

This has forced me to re-think my position on providing the at the time of writing $20,200 worth of FREE open source software (as valued by ohloh).

With the free updates and free support, which until this moment I had not minded doing.

As you can see except for the one google addwords bar at the top of this blog (which no one ever clicks) this blog and the information provided is Add FREE, being as the cost of running Saiweb is not going to be helped by relying on ‘Good will’ of the users it helps, Saiweb will shortly be undergoing a radical restructure.

The ‘Build Your Own HD Youtube series’ with immediate effect is now canceled.

Saiweb will continue to operate as normal with regard to all other projects until further notice.
